This tour is a Hoi An Countryside Tour which helps you discover hidden gems of Hoi An.
Where is Cam Kim Island:
Cam Kim is an island in Hoi An. It is located on the opposite side of Hoi An old town, in the Hoi An countryside. Even though, it is considered a part of Hoi An, it is still a remote area. The local people of Cam Kim is still farming and preserving the beauty of crafts. They are very famous for wood carving business, mat weaving, basket boat making,… Cam Kim bicycle tour will help you discover all of those.
What can we see in Cam Kim Island:
Cam Kim has lots of things to do. The Hoi An countryside in Cam Kim is a must- see. The population of the island is about 4,000 people. The island is far from the bustle and hustle city, so the people are very friendly and the place is full of countryside. There are lots of rice fields, peanut and sesame farms, fishing villages.
The first stop is Kim Bong carpentry village. Kim Bong carpentry village, located in Cam Kim Commune, Hoi An, Vietnam, is a centuries-old craft village renowned for its exquisite woodworking. Artisans there have passed down their skills through generations, creating a diverse range of products from architectural elements and furniture to religious artifacts and decorative carvings. Using techniques honed over time, they craft intricate designs with high-quality local hardwoods. Historically, the village contributed significantly to Hoi An’s architecture. Today, it’s a popular tourist destination where visitors can observe artisans at work, participate in workshops, and purchase handcrafted items, making it a vital part of Vietnamese cultural heritage.
The second visit is Mat weaving houses of local people. Mat weaving is a traditional craft in Kim Bong Carpentry Village in Hoi An, Vietnam. Visitors can learn about and watch the process of weaving mats at the village. Most of the families in the village are not rich. They still use the simple techniques to make mats. The mats are made from reeds – a kind of grass from the river. One day they can make one mat, and sell them to the people in Hoi An. If they want to make some extra money, they will carry mats on their scooters and sell them in Da Nang. Mats are widely used by the Vietnamese, because the weather here is hot in summer, and wet in the winter. Mats can be dried quickly and easily washed.
The next stop wil be basket boat making. The basket boats are very famous in Hoi An. The poor fishermen often use them to catch fish on the river or on the sea, because simply they can not afford big boats. In the past, the big fishing boats had to pay more tax.
The basket boats were often exempted from tax. Today, the fishermen still use basket boats to catch fish. Surprisingly, all the basket boats are made in Cam Kim. The basket boat is made from bamboo. The bamboo will be put in to the river for 3 months before being used to make the boat. After, the boat builder will use a layer of tar or cow dung to make it water proofed.
Next, you also should see rice paper making in Kim Bong. Local families traditionally practice the craft of making rice paper, allowing tourists to experience and learn the process firsthand; essentially, you can take a hands-on rice paper making class in a rural setting on Cam Kim Island.
The last stop is Tra Nhieu fishing village. Tra Nhieu fishing village, located near Hoi An, offers an authentic glimpse into traditional Vietnamese coastal life. Unlike the bustling tourism of Hoi An, Tra Nhieu is a working village where fishing is the primary occupation. Its location within a rich mangrove ecosystem, crisscrossed by waterways, supports traditional fishing practices like net fishing and clam harvesting. The village’s unique small fishing boats are a common sight.
While some eco-tourism initiatives are developing, Tra Nhieu retains its simple, community-focused lifestyle, providing a tranquil contrast to Hoi An and the chance to experience local culture, observe traditional practices, and perhaps sample fresh seafood. It’s a place where you can witness the rhythms of the sea and river, and a unique piece of Vietnam’s coastal heritage.
