Okay, so you're cruising into Vietnam, right? You HAVE to check out Hoi An and Da Nang. They're like, the two most popular spots on the central coast, and they're super close to where your ship docks at Tien Sa port.
Hoi An is seriously cool – it used to be this HUGE international trading hub way back in the day, like, for ships from Japan, China, and Europe. Luckily for us, it somehow dodged all the bombs and crazy development, so it's kept all its old-school charm.
Okay, Hoi An is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for a reason. It’s like stepping back in time to this super cool South-East Asian trading port that was around from the 15th to the 19th century. While Hue might be famous for its Citadel, Hoi An is the place to go for that “old Vietnam” vibe. The mix of Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, and European style is just amazing. The Old Town has over 1,000 timber buildings – temples, shops, houses – it’s a seriously cool place to wander around.
And get this – you HAVE to do an eco-tour to really see Hoi An! It’s so cool – you can try your hand at farming with the locals, put on their clothes and all, and work in the fields, then hop on a riverboat to see how the fishermen cast their nets! It’s totally immersive and shows you what life is like there.
Hoi An is this charming little “peaceful meeting place,” and it’s famous for its totally unique architecture. It’s got this amazing mix of Vietnamese, Japanese, Chinese, and French styles all mashed together! Where else can you find Japanese bridges AND the Old Quarter all in one small town? And it’s literally just 30km from the port, so it makes it super easy to do a day trip from your cruise. We’re gonna get into all the cool things to see and do in both cities, so you can pick what’s best for you!
Da Nang, on the other hand, is this awesome port city right on the coast, with the Han River running through it. It’s in the perfect spot to hit a bunch of UNESCO World Heritage sites, like Hue, Hoi An, and My Son. Plus, it’s got cool stuff like the Lady Buddha, the Han River Bridge, and awesome beaches like My Khe – it’s totally a must-see! And get this, Da Nang is a major port, so why even bother going to Hoi An first when you can start exploring right away!
Ready for an adventure? Then it’s time for the Marble Mountains! Imagine a place with hidden caves, carved pathways, and ancient temples all nestled amongst stunning marble hills. It’s a bit of a climb in places, but the views and discoveries are totally worth it. Pack your camera and get ready to explore!
Okay, so we talked about Da Nang being awesome, right? Well, just outside the city is this place called Ba Na Hills – and it’s where you’ll find the Golden Hand Bridge. Imagine a bridge held up by two gigantic stone hands – yeah, it’s as crazy as it sounds! We definitely have to go!
Okay, so when should you hit up Da Nang and Hoi An? Well, it should def be on your list – maybe even at the top when the timing is right. Da Nang is this gorgeous coastal city where you can swim in the beautiful ocean water at some world-class beaches. But there’s more to it than just the beaches! You’ve got the My Son temples (the Angkor Wat of Vietnam!), the cool Marble Mountains, the French-style Ba Na Hills, and so much to do. Just a little south of Da Nang is Hoi An, which is famous worldwide for its chill, old-fashioned atmosphere. Colorful silks line the streets, temples and bridges are everywhere, plus you can do stuff like visit the local vegetable village.
The weather is basically tropical monsoon – warm all year, but with a wet and a dry season. Dry season is from April to August, and wet is September to March, with temps between 18°C and 34°C (64°F – 93°F). The best time to go is Feb to May. The skies are clear, the sun’s out, and humidity is low, making it perfect for sightseeing. Strolling the cities or hopping into a taxi when it’s not raining. You can even get a bit of sunbathing since beach temps are around 25°C (77°F).
Wet Season (Oct-Mar): Expect lots of rain and cooler temps averaging around 26°C (79°F). It’s not too hot, but the rain can make it harder to do outdoor stuff, especially at the beach since it’s often cold and rough. The coolest time is Nov to Jan but can get crazy storms and floods. I wouldn’t recommend booking your trip during this time, but check the weather if you do!
Dry Season (Jan-Sept): Gets HOT – 26°C to 35°C (79°F – 95°F), with high humidity. You’ll need hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen! June to August is the hottest. The best time for outdoor fun is Feb to March, when things are milder (20°C-27°C or 68°F – 81°F), but it also gets super crowded. From April to August, things are hot and sticky.
