My Son sanctuary – the Ancient Hindu temple
My Son Sanctuary is an ancient complex of Hindu temples located near Hoi An in central Vietnam. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important archaeological sites in Southeast Asia. The sanctuary was built by the Cham civilization between the 4th and 14th centuries to worship Hindu deities, primarily Shiva, who was known as Bhadresvara to the Cham people
The temples were constructed from red brick and stone, using techniques that are still not fully understood today. The temples are dedicated to various Hindu gods, with intricate carvings and sculptures depicting scenes from Hindu mythology.
The architecture at My Son showcases the Champa Kingdom’s craftsmanship and influence from Indian Hindu culture. The temples are adorned with beautiful bas-reliefs, statues of deities, and symbolic carvings.
My Son served as the religious and political capital of the Champa Kingdom, which ruled central and southern Vietnam for centuries. It was used for ceremonies, worship, and as a burial site for kings and religious leaders.
